Sea Transportation

The country has about 7,107 islands. Besides taking a plane or helicopter, the only way to visit these islands is by boat if bridges from one island to the next are not available. Sea transport plays a fundamental part of travel in the whole archipelago. A wide range of sea vessels are available, from huge cargo ships to small ferry boats, from outrigger canoes to fast crafts.

Fast crafts are slowly taking over sea transport in the busy ports of the South, making inter-island whether for business or leisure much faster.  These wonderful boats have amazed local passengers used to slow uncomfortable modes of sea travel, with their comfortable airline-type seats, air-conditioning, wall to wall carpeting, canteens and mini bars, and good-looking stewards and stewardesses.

Inter-island vessels connect Manila to major ports, while ferry services connect major islands to smaller islands.  Rates usually start at P750 from Manila to the Visayas and P1,150 from Manila to Mindanao.  The lists of schedules, rates, and destinations of all major and most minor shipping companies are published in national and community newspapers.
